Hair Reduction

Until now, the only way to remove unwanted hair was by shaving, using depilatories, waxing, or tweezing. Even though no method of hair removal is completely permanent, new laser technology has provided an option that is more enduring for most patients than other methods. First, the hairs in the area to be treated should be at least stubble length to achieve a satisfactory result.

A cooling Aloe Vera gel is then applied to the skin to protect it and keep it cool. The area is then scanned with the laser, treating an area about the size of a dime. Unlike electrolysis (in which each hair follicle must be treated with a needle, a slower and more painful process), the laser disables the hair follicle, such that hair grows back slower and finer. The procedure is performed in the doctor's office, and can take a few minutes to a few hours, depending upon the size of the area being treated.

The timing and number of treatments required for the best long-term results will depend upon factors such as hair and skin color; recent tanning or sunburn; use of certain medications; hormones; and the location of the areas being treated. You may experience some slight reddening in the area, but this will usually subside shortly after treatment. Most patients return to normal activities right away.

However, it is advised that you avoid sun exposure for several days after treatment to avoid hyperpigmentation of treated areas.
