What You Should know before Your Appointment

Pre-Sclerotherapy Instructions

  1. Avoid applying moisturizer to your legs for 24 hours before your treatment.

  2. Avoid shaving your legs for 24 hours before your treatment.

  3. Avoid aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) for one week prior to your treatment.

  4. Bring compression stockings with you to put on after your treatment session. They should be full pantyhose style or thigh-high and provide 15-20 mm Hg compression.

Examples include Delilah by Sigvaris, Juzo Lite Line, and Jobst Ultrasheer. They can be purchased at medical supply stores. ACPS offers a small selection of compression stockings for your convenience (limited on colors and styles).

  5. Bring some loose-fitting shorts to wear during the treatment and something long and loose (a skirt or wide-leg pants) to wear after the treatment so that the bandages will be covered.

  6. Avoid self tanners on legs

Post-Sclerotherapy Instructions

  1. Please go for at least a 15 to 30 minute walk right after treatment, and walk as much as possible for the first 5-7 days. If you have a long drive, you should stop every 20 minutes to get out of the car and walk for 5 minutes.

  2. Keep the bandages and cotton balls dry and in place until tomorrow morning, then remove them and bathe as you would usually do. Please avoid hot baths, as heat causes blood vessels to dilate.

  3. Avoid weight lifting, running, and high-impact aerobics for about
    a week.

  4. Avoid prolonged periods of standing or sitting. If you have to sit or stand for a long period of time, get up and move around for five minutes, or at least flex your ankles periodically to activate the venous pump in the calf muscles.

  5. Wearing compression stocking on a regular basis helps prevent the recurrence of leg veins. It's especially important to wear them daily in the first week or two following sclerotherapy.

If you won't or can't wear the medical compression stockings on a regular basis for prevention of recurring veins, at least wear some form of support stocking such as Haines Revitalizing Collection (ultimate strength is the strongest).

  6. Bruising and tenderness may occur but is generally mild and temporary. If you develop a tender lumpy area, please call us.

  7. Schedule a follow-up appointment about 4-6 weeks after your treatment.
